Son of the painter Angelo Bonfanti, he was born in Bergamo in 1952. In 1970 he graduated from the Art School of Bergamo. Since 1972 he has alternated work in the study with teaching in various Higher Institutes. In 2018 he taught painting at the Santa Giulia Academy of Fine Arts in Brescia. He carries out exhibition activities in Italy and abroad.

He wins in 2004 “The Prize of the Lord Mayor” International Biennial of Drawing in Pilsen and in 2015 he exhibits at the exhibition “A Different Perspective: Artwork by the Laureates of the Biennial of Drawing Pilsen”, at the Museum of West Bohemia. In 2008 Micaela Vernice presented the thesis of the Degree Course in Modern Literature at the Catholic University of Milan with the following title: "The human figure in the work of Maurizio Bonfanti."
